#1: Texas leads the pack
Texas emerged as the state with the most affordable grocery prices. With a Grocery Prices Index of 90.3, grocery costs in Texas are 9.7% below the national average. This is significant because, even with a reported increase of 27.16% in grocery prices over the past two years, Texas continues to offer considerable savings for its residents.
The affordability in Texas can be attributed to a number of factors, including efficient supply chains, competitive retail markets, and a robust agricultural industry that supports lower food costs.
#2: Michigan
Michigan takes the second spot in the study with a Grocery Prices Index of 91.6. What sets Michigan apart is its price stability over the past two years. Unlike most states that have experienced significant increases in grocery costs, Michigan is the only state in the top ten that recorded a slight decline in prices at -0.98%. This stability means that consumers in Michigan have not been heavily impacted by inflationary trends that have affected other parts of the country.

Mississippi secured the third position despite a 22.22% increase in grocery prices over the past two years. The state’s per-person grocery cost, reported at $423.33, reflects a combination of factors, including regional supply challenges and localized economic conditions.
Arkansas, which ranked fourth, comes in with an index of 92.7. The state recorded the steepest price increase among the top states at 30.72% over the last two years. However, Arkansas still maintains a very attractive per-person cost at $282.46.
Kentucky and Indiana occupy the fifth and sixth positions in the study, with Grocery Prices Index values of 93.5 and 93.7. Kentucky manages to keep costs relatively low at $315.20 per person, and has experienced only a moderate increase of 13.51% over the past two years.
Indiana, on the other hand, has seen grocery prices increase by 27.20% since 2022, placing it among the states with some of the largest price hikes. Despite this, the per-person cost in Indiana is reported at $318.03. chain variations, can create noticeable fluctuations in prices.
#7, #8, & #9: Oklahoma, Kansas, and Tennessee
