Want to buy a home, but can't afford it? Ordering online may be an option for owning your own home when prices are steep. Walmart.com is selling a 19 ft. by 20 ft. home for just under $16K.  It's sturdy enough to endure 70 mile per hour winds and 6 feet of snow piling up on the roof.

How is that possible? This house folds up and is delivered to wherever you want it on a flatbed truck. Once it's where you want it, it expands to its full size using hydraulics.

There is a catch, though. You are responsible for getting the tiny house off the truck. That means you'll need to rent a forklift and find someone who knows how to drive it.

Amazon has similar tiny houses you can purchase and get shipped to you, too. If 19 ft. by 20 ft. sounds a bit small, Amazon has a two-story home for just under $50,000, which is still super cheap in this housing market.

Of course, no matter what tiny home suits your needs, you'll still need property to put it on. That may not be a problem, though, if you have a relative or friend with a little land they're willing to let you use.

Tiny home living may be for you

If tiny home living is tempting, you should know that it's not some fringe movement full of off-grid types. It's actually a sensible move towards affordable living. According to a report by Technavio, the tiny house market is on track to increase by $4.82 billion between 2023 and 2028

Here are some factors that will determine if you're ready for the tiny home life:

  • Are you okay with not having a lot of stuff? Tiny home living requires a minimalist lifestyle.
  • A tiny home may not be the best choice if you have a lot of indoor pets, or just one or two large dogs.
  • In addition to the land and the house itself, you'll need to finance connecting the tiny home to electricity and sewage. If the property you plan on using doesn't already have electric and sewage access, you'll need to pay to have these installed, which can cost several thousand dollars.
