What to know about moving in Jacksonville
In 2021, the monthly costs for an individual Jacksonville resident’s rent, utilities, food, and vehicle fuel only totaled $1,566.1 This makes Jacksonville’s living costs surprisingly low considering it’s the most populous metro in Florida.
And while Jacksonville still made our list of cities with the highest living costs, it wasn’t even in the top 40. Living costs in other Florida cities like Miami, Tampa, and Orlando are several hundred dollars higher than Jacksonville’s.
This relative affordability makes Jacksonville a great place to live if you want proximity to Florida’s world-famous beaches without paying through the nose.
Speaking of beaches…
Yes, Jacksonville is just a short drive away from several excellent beaches and beachfront communities including Jacksonville Beach, Atlantic Beach, Neptune Beach, and Ponte Vedra Beach.
And since Jacksonville lies right along Florida’s east coast, there are many more beaches you can reach if you’re willing to drive a few hours.
Additionally, the St. Johns River runs directly through Jacksonville, so you can even find exquisite waterfront beauty in the heart of the city.
As you’d expect from any city in Florida, Jacksonville has hot summers, temperate winters, and a lot of rain. Jacksonville gets its hottest in July when temperatures average over 80° Fahrenheit, and it gets the most rainfall in August with precipitation averaging 5.8 inches.2
What does this mean for your move? It means you should avoid moving to or around Jacksonville in the dead of summer if you can. Moving in 80-degree temperatures is miserable at best, and it can be dangerous if you don’t hydrate and rest properly. Similarly, moving during a rainstorm is no one’s definition of a good time.
If you can swing it, try to plan your move in early fall or late spring when Jacksonville’s temperatures are much cooler and it rains less. If you have to move in the summer, ensure you and your moving crew stay hydrated and avoid the sun. You should also pack water-sensitive belongings into waterproof plastic containers or trash bags to keep them safe from rain.
On average, it costs between $550–$2,000 to hire full-service movers for a local move. If you hire a moving container company instead, the range goes down to $500–$1,500. Renting a moving truck is the cheapest way to move, and it can cost as little $132 to rent a moving truck for a local move, though it will require you to do all the work.
Your exact price will depend on exactly how far you’re moving, how much stuff you have to move, and what moving service you get. Additionally, different moving companies will charge different rates for the same service, so you should get quotes from multiple movers near you to ensure you’re getting the cheapest price you can.
