There’s nothing worse than hearing the sound of broken glass while you or your movers handle a moving box. Luckily, there are several options for boxes that are specifically designed to reduce damage to your glassware and prevent items from moving around too much on the moving truck.

I bought, assembled, and tested four similarly priced glass kits from several well-known brands to find the kit that provides the best protection, most space, highest budget-friendly value, and most comprehensive all-in-one experience for your glasses.

We  ordered all these boxes online. All of them required some assembly, and I used a variety of wine glasses, pint glasses, and ceramic mugs to fill the boxes. Because I wanted to test the kits and everything they came with, I didn’t use any extra bubble wrap or packing paper when packing these boxes. When you move, it's a good idea to get some essential packing materials.

U-Haul Glass Pack Kit with Box features 18-cell divider, foam pouches, and medium box.

Coming in at $11.95, the U-Haul Glass Pack Kit was impressive in more than one area, but its price point sets it apart from all the rest. With space for up to 18 glasses, you’re getting a great amount of space too. Kit assembly was a breeze, and everything fit perfectly without forcing dividers into the box. The kit included a box and foam dividers—the only kit on the list to include both.

The box held up well when I stacked and carried it, but it was noticeably thinner than other boxes. Built-in handles were great to have, but I noticed some tears in the handles with a fully-loaded box of up to 65 lbs.

As the cheapest option of the group, the U-Haul Glass Pack Kit gives you decent durability and everything you need to quickly start packing without purchasing extra materials.

The Duck Brand Glass Kit comes with one small box and four dividers to separate 9 tall glasses.

The Duck Brand Glass Kit is our pick for best all-in-one kit because of its good size, average price, and satisfactory protection. There are cheaper kits and kits that offer better protection, but the Duck Brand Glass Kit provides enough in each area to be an excellent fit for scenarios like quick apartment moves and packing small boxes for college

The kit includes a small box and dividers, giving you nine cells to pack with glasses. Because of its 12-inch depth, you can fit some fairly large items, but you’ll want to buy extra packing materials to secure smaller mugs and glasses at the bottom of the box.

Home Depot's Glass Divider Kit features a two-tiered design that can hold up to 30 glasses. Home Depot recommends pairing with a heavy-duty box with preprinted labels and built-in handles.

The Home Depot Glass Packing Kit easily took the spot for the most space. Its two-tiered design allows you to basically double what you could fit in other boxes, giving you 30 cells to work with. The kit sells for $11.98 and comes with cardboard cell dividers and a cardboard base to stack your second tier.

The Home Depot Glass Packing Kit didn’t come with a box or any other protection. You will need purchase that separately. The Home Depot sites says you should use the kit with a heavy-duty box, which I highly recommend using.

The standard medium box sells for $1.81, which works in a pinch, but the heavy-duty box was one of the more durable boxes I used. The heavy-duty box costs $3.20, so it can add up if you buy a few, but its double-corrugated cardboard design held up very well under a stacking and carrying test. I felt confident that the built-in handles wouldn’t tear—even with a fully-loaded 75 lbs box.

Lowe's Project Source Glass Kit comes with five dividers and four foam pouches. Box is sold separately.

The Lowe’s Project Source Glass Packing Kit is the most expensive kit of the group at $19.48 but for good reason. Even without the heavy-duty box option, this sturdily-constructed kit provided strong protection. The box that matches it is just $1.28, with the heavy-duty option being $2.26, though you need to purchase either separately.

What set this kit apart from the rest was the 12 reusable foam pouches. They were much thicker than the U-Haul pouches and provided much more protection for glassware.

When I assembled this kit, I found that the divider didn’t fit in the box as easily as the other kits. While this slowed down the process, I actually secured the divider in the box much more snugly than in the other kits. Because of this, my glassware felt much more stable when carrying the box. I searched for customer reviews to see if anyone else experienced this, but didn’t find any reports.

How to pack glass

Save yourself the headache later and put some time into packing your glasses properly. Any of these kits will do depending on your needs, and having those cardboard dividers will help to minimize any bumping while they’re on the moving truck.

Pin
Keep in mind

The main idea is to eliminate empty space in the box with packing materials like bubble wrap, foam inserts, or even old clothes. Empty space in a box with glass is not your friend!

Our recommendation

After assembling, testing, and stacking all of these moving box glass kits, we can recommend any of them depending on your needs.

If you’re on a budget, the U-Haul Glass Pack Kit gives you a great price and solid protection. The Home Depot Glass Packing Kit provides plenty of space and durability. If you’re buying for glassware protection, the Lowe’s Project Source Glass Packing Kit stands alone. And finally, if you need a sturdy, good-sized kit that won't break the bank, the Duck Brand Glass Kit is the way to go.
